From Taratala to the World: The Remarkable Journey of Chief Engineer Nagendra Sahani

There are friendships that stay with you for life, and then there are people who become the very definition of inspiration within your circle. For me—and for many of us from the DMET (now IMU Kolkata) Class of 2011—that person is Nagendra Sahani.

I’ve known Nagendra, or as we all fondly call him, Naagu da, since the very first day of college. Eighteen years of friendship have taught me a lot, but more than anything, they’ve shown me what true transformation looks like. I am not typically someone known for overt humility, but when it comes to Naagu da, I can say without hesitation: he is the best of us.

This blog is a collective tribute. My batchmate and friend Rituraj (Roll Number 6287, His life story woudl be out soon, who has walked this journey alongside us, helped me craft this story. In many ways, Rituraj’s words echo what we all feel about Nagendra: he is an example of what DMET can make possible—a living testament to perseverance, transformation, and the indomitable spirit of a seafarer.

Humble Beginnings, Towering Ambitions

Rituraj recalls his first meeting with Nagendra vividly: August 27, 2007, in the sweltering Junior Hostel recreation room, where over 148 freshers were cramped together, sweating and anxious about the days to come. Nagendra, then just one of many rural boys who had stepped into the hallowed grounds of DMET, already stood out in his own quiet way. Lanky, strong, with the kind of raw wit and charm that only someone from a small town can carry, Nagendra’s presence was unmistakable.

What started as the image of a modest boy from Bihar quickly evolved. Over the years, we watched him develop not just as a marine engineer but as a complete human being—steadfast, kind-hearted, and relentlessly driven.

The Making of a Marine Legend

Nagendra’s transformation from a shy fresher into a world-class marine engineer is nothing short of awe-inspiring. His career trajectory speaks volumes about his relentless work ethic and technical acumen. Here’s a glimpse of his extraordinary professional journey:

  • Chief Engineer at Fleet Management Ltd. (2020–Present) Over four years, Nagendra has commanded bulk carriers and container vessels of varying sizes—from VLOCs and Capesize to Panamax and Handymax ships. His technical expertise spans MAN B&W ME-C, ME-B, and MC engines, dry dockings, class and flag changes, and complex machinery breakdown management.

  • Second Engineer at Dynacom Tankers (2018–2020) This role saw Nagendra deepening his expertise in CPP propulsion, shaft generators, and deck crane systems. His leadership in crew management, safety, and inventory control made him an asset on every vessel he served.

  • Third Engineer at Anglo-Eastern (2009–2018) Here, he laid the foundation of his career, proving himself through countless challenges in engine maintenance, survey preparation, and operational troubleshooting.

With over 34 months as Chief Engineer, his resume is studded with leadership-driven projects—be it overseeing dry docking, resolving critical technical breakdowns mid-sea, or guiding onboard teams through the daily grind of marine life.

Over the past few years, I have met many DMETian leaders in shipping who have transformed the industry, and I can confidently say that I see glimpses of those same leadership qualities in Nagendra!

More Than Just an Engineer

What makes Nagendra truly exceptional isn’t just his resume. It’s his multifaceted growth as a person. A fitness enthusiast, Nagendra has long championed the importance of physical and mental wellness—often inspiring peers and juniors alike to adopt a healthier lifestyle.

But perhaps his most remarkable quality is his deep-rooted commitment to social causes, especially education for the underprivileged. Even as his career soared, he never forgot where he came from, and he’s worked tirelessly to uplift those who walk the same difficult path he once did.

As Rituraj beautifully puts it:

"Many are unaware of his really humble beginnings. To see him reach such towering heights is heartwarming. It’s a testament to his willpower—a fire that has never dimmed, a drive that constantly propels him forward."

A Friend, A Brother, A Role Model

For those of us lucky enough to know him personally, Nagendra isn’t just a batchmate or a colleague—he’s a pillar of strength and wisdom. His story is a constant reminder that no matter where you start in life, your determination and values can carve out a path to greatness.

“Naagu da, I know I will always have a friend in you, and so shall you. Keep moving and keep inspiring.” — Rituraj
