Is Money Important? Hell Yes! But Not All the Time

Money is undoubtedly essential. It buys the necessities and luxuries of life, providing a sense of security and comfort. However, its importance is often exaggerated. Money is only truly valuable when spent. Otherwise, it remains just paper and digital numbers.

We frequently chase after money that we never spend, buy houses we never live in, and cars we rarely drive. This relentless pursuit often comes at the expense of the most precious resource we possess: time. Each of us is granted 24 hours a day, and that, my friend, is the true currency of life.

People often advise me to stay in town and closely monitor my business, warning that others might cheat me. While it's true that some individuals might deceive you, I hold a different perspective. If I can earn 80 instead of 100 but retain my time, I consider it a positive bargain.

Time and the Mountains

As a world record-holding mountaineer, I’ve learned firsthand the true value of time. Each expedition requires meticulous planning, training, and significant time away from everyday life. When you’re scaling a mountain, money can’t buy you extra hours of daylight, a clear path through treacherous terrain, or the strength to push through the final ascent. It’s the time you’ve invested in preparation, the moments spent acclimatizing to high altitudes, and the countless hours dedicated to building physical and mental resilience that truly matter.

For instance, during my ascent of Everest, there were moments when the temptation to rush and save time was immense. But in mountaineering, hasty decisions can be deadly. It’s about pacing yourself, making each step count, and understanding that time is a critical investment in your safety and success.

Similarly, in life, the time spent with loved ones, pursuing passions, and experiencing the world holds far greater value than any financial gain. If I had chosen to prioritise accumulating wealth over climbing mountains, I would have missed out on the unparalleled joy and fulfillment that comes from standing on the world's highest peaks.

Time is the most expensive currency in the world. Spend it wisely.
