Capt. Vikas Pandey’s Vision to Revolutionize Maritime Finance with ShipFinex

Capt. Vikas Pandey, Founder & CEO of ShipFinex, shared an innovative vision of transforming the shipping industry through blockchain and fractional ship ownership. A former seafarer turned entrepreneur, he explained how sailors spend their lives working on ships but rarely get the opportunity to own a part of the very asset class that generates global wealth.

Through ShipFinex, he aims to change that by allowing individuals to invest in ships with fractional ownership using blockchain-based tokenization technology. The platform enables investors to buy small shares in ships, earn passive income from vessel operations, and even trade their ownership tokens transparently.

Capt. Vikas highlighted the challenges of traditional ship financing, where ownership has historically remained limited to ultra-rich institutions and large family offices. By leveraging blockchain, regulatory approvals, and digital transparency, ShipFinex is opening maritime investments to a wider global audience.

He also emphasized India’s massive untapped maritime potential, noting that despite India carrying one of the world’s largest export-import volumes, most cargo is still controlled by foreign ship owners. His vision aligns with India’s long-term maritime growth ambitions by encouraging Indians to participate directly in ship ownership and maritime wealth creation.

The session inspired the audience with the idea that the future of shipping finance will be more transparent, accessible, and technology-driven, allowing even ordinary sailors to become stakeholders in the global maritime economy.

Capt. Gaurav Bajaj — Embracing Technology & Innovation in Maritime

Capt. Gaurav Bajaj shared an inspiring journey of transformation — from a seafarer to a technology leader shaping the future of maritime simulation and digital innovation.

He reflected on how career decisions often begin without proper guidance, explaining how he explored multiple paths before destiny brought him into shipping. He encouraged young mariners and engineers to actively participate in the growing maritime tech ecosystem, reminding everyone that the future of shipping will belong to those who continuously adapt and learn.

Mr. Abhay Gupta — From Marine Engineer to India’s Luxury Industry Pioneer

Mr. Abhay Gupta shared a remarkable journey of reinvention, proving how maritime discipline can create success far beyond the seas.

Starting as a marine engineer, he reflected on how destiny led him into shipping despite multiple career opportunities in engineering, architecture, and aviation. After leaving sailing in the early 1990s, during India’s economic liberalization, he entered the luxury and fashion industry through an unexpected newspaper advertisement seeking a marine engineer for technology transfer in a French manufacturing company.

What made marine engineers valuable, he explained, was their ability to manage complex systems under pressure. His maritime training combining mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and operational understanding, helped him successfully establish advanced manufacturing plants in India and later lead major luxury and fashion ventures.

Over the years, he played a key role in bringing several international luxury brands into India, building luxury retail infrastructure, and shaping India’s premium lifestyle market. From managing manufacturing plants to opening luxury stores for global brands like Versace, he became one of the country’s leading voices in luxury strategy, education, and brand management.

One of the strongest takeaways from his session was that a maritime background is not a limitation — it is a differentiator. Mariners are trained to survive uncertainty, solve problems under pressure, innovate continuously, and lead complex operations. According to him, these qualities are exactly what industries across the world seek today.

He concluded by emphasizing that innovation, adaptability, and lifelong learning are the real engines of success. Though he left the sea decades ago, the discipline and mindset of a mariner continue to guide his journey even today.

Capt. Gaurav Chhabra — Founder & CEO, Pragymatic Marine Solutions

Capt. Gaurav Chhabra delivered one of the most engaging and inspiring sessions of the conclave, blending humor, honesty, and entrepreneurial insight through his remarkable professional journey. From sailing onboard ships to leading global sales roles, founding maritime consulting ventures, writing music, and entering the film production industry, his story reflected the limitless possibilities available to maritime professionals willing to take risks and reinvent themselves.

Drawing from his extensive experience in maritime sales, simulation technology, SaaS platforms, and entrepreneurship, he highlighted how seafarers naturally develop strong capabilities in leadership, project management, adaptability, crisis handling, and decision-making under pressure. He explained that these qualities become powerful assets not only within shipping but also across entirely different industries.

Capt. Gaurav Chhabra also spoke candidly about the realities of entrepreneurship, including financial risks, investor trust, failures, learning curves, and the emotional challenges of building ventures from scratch. Sharing experiences from his film production journey, he emphasized that every new industry demands patience, resilience, and continuous learning.

A key message from his session was the importance of credibility and trust within the maritime community. He acknowledged how strong professional relationships and mutual confidence among mariners helped him secure support and investments during difficult phases of his entrepreneurial journey.

His session ultimately encouraged young professionals and seafarers to explore opportunities beyond conventional career paths, pursue their passions with courage, and remain open to lifelong learning and reinvention.

He emphasized how technology, automation, and AI can improve transparency, reduce procurement costs, and connect ship managers directly with verified global suppliers. Through practical industry examples, he demonstrated the growing role of digital solutions in modern shipping operations.

A key takeaway from his session was that seafarers naturally possess problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and practical innovation skills that can help them succeed beyond traditional sailing careers. He also stressed the importance of trust, collaboration, and strong community support within the maritime ecosystem.

Governance, Ethics & Leadership

Governance and ethical leadership became recurring themes across multiple sessions.

Industry leaders repeatedly stressed that organizations lacking ethical foundations may achieve temporary success, but cannot sustain long-term growth.

The conclave emphasized the importance of:

  • Transparency

  • Integrity

  • Accountability

  • Fairness

  • Responsible leadership

  • Long-term credibility

Several speakers highlighted that trust remains one of the most valuable assets in both entrepreneurship and maritime operations.

The discussions reinforced that sustainable leadership is not built through hierarchy alone, but through mutual respect, communication, and value-driven decision making.

Education & Skill Development: Preparing Future Leaders

Education emerged as another major pillar of the conclave.

Speakers stressed that educational systems must evolve beyond producing degree holders and instead focus on creating:
