What Is Tribology and Why Does It Matter?

Tribology, the science of friction, wear, and lubrication, is often called the backbone of machinery maintenance. For marine engineers, it plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability of engines, pumps, and other mechanical components that operate under extreme conditions at sea. Understanding tribological principles can:

  • Extend machinery life by reducing wear and tear.

  • Improve energy efficiency through better lubrication practices.

  • Minimize operational risks and prevent breakdowns during voyages.

As marine engineers, mastering these principles is not just beneficial—it is essential.

Who Is Mr. Sanjiv? Why Is His Expertise Unique?

This week’s session will be conducted by Mr. Sanjiv, a luminary in the field of Tribology and Marine Lubrication. His credentials speak volumes about his expertise:

  • Academic and Industry Background:A mechanical engineer from IIT Bombay, Mr. Sanjiv began his career sailing with the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) and other companies for over a decade, later transitioning to roles as Engineer Superintendent and technical advisor.

  • Decades of Expertise in Lubrication:Mr. Sanjiv’s career includes leadership roles with Chevron, BP Marine Lubricants, and LUKOIL Marine Lubes. He currently serves as Technical Adviser for LENOL Marine Lubricants in the region, bringing over 25 years of hands-on experience in marine lubrication.

  • Academic and Professional Contributions:A Fellow of the Institute of Marine Engineers (India), and a Certified Lubrication Specialist from STLE, Mr. Sanjiv has authored over 35 articles in the series “LUBE MATTERS,” making him one of the foremost authorities in marine lubrication and Tribology.

  • Passion for Teaching and Training:As a guest faculty member at the IMEI Training Institute in Mumbai and a frequent speaker at seminars and training sessions, Mr. Sanjiv has dedicated his career to sharing his wealth of knowledge.

What to Expect from the Session

The session will introduce core concepts of Tribology:

  1. Friction: Understanding its impact on machinery performance.

  2. Wear: Mechanisms of wear and strategies for mitigation.

  3. Viscosity: Importance of viscosity in selecting the right lubricants.

  4. Lubrication Regimes: From boundary to hydrodynamic lubrication, the science behind how lubricants function.

This first part of a comprehensive series will lay the foundation for applying these principles effectively in marine environments, making it highly relevant for marine engineers aiming to enhance operational efficiency and reduce costs.

Why All Marine Engineers Should Attend

  1. Critical Knowledge for Career Growth:Tribology is integral to every marine engineer’s toolkit. This session will deepen your understanding of the science behind lubrication, equipping you with skills to excel in roles requiring technical and operational expertise.

  2. Real-World Applications:Learn from a seasoned expert who has worked extensively in marine lubrication, blending academic theories with practical insights.

  3. Exclusive Access to Expertise:With over two decades of experience in the field, Mr. Sanjiv’s insights are invaluable for understanding the nuances of Tribology.

  4. Networking Opportunity:Engage with fellow professionals and gain access to a like-minded community passionate about marine engineering excellence.
