A Glorious Sporting Legacy at DMET

The Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), now the Indian Maritime University – Kolkata Campus, has always stood as a symbol of maritime excellence, discipline, and leadership. Since its inception in 1949, DMET has not merely trained cadets it has forged professionals who power the engines of the global shipping industry.

What many may fondly recall, beyond the classrooms and the engine rooms, is the undeniable presence of sports as a way of life. Within the walls of this esteemed institution, sports were not extracurricular they were integral. Every evening, cadets would head to their respective fields, courts, or tables not for recreation alone, but for discipline, growth and self-mastery.

These grounds have witnessed more than just games; they have seen bonds formed, characters tested, and leaders shaped. It is from this deep-rooted tradition that “Chakravyuh” was born.

What is Chakravyuh?

Initiated as part of Tempest the largest maritime fest in the world Chakravyuh represents the sports wing of this iconic event. While Tempest began in 1973 as a cultural gathering (then known as “Marino Fest”), the natural athleticism and sportsmanship within DMET called for something more. Thus, Chakravyuh was conceived not merely as a competition, but as a celebration of physical excellence, endurance, and unity.

Held in the days leading up to Tempest, Chakravyuh now includes 10 different sports tournaments played with an energy that echoes across the campus. It is where voices cheer from the cricket pitch, where the bounce of a basketball synchronizes with heartbeats, and where silence and strategy reign over a chessboard.

But Chakravyuh is more than the sum of its events it is a testament to the unbreakable spirit of DMET cadets.

CHAKRAVYUH

The sports wing of Tempest, consisting of 10 different sports tournaments, is the symbol for physical excellence and sportsmanship which tests not just the strength, but also the spirit of every participant. It starts almost a week before Tempest and just only on the MERI sports ground 4 different sports tournaments are organized. You can hear cheers from the cricket pitch, the echo of spikes on the football ground, the sharp whistle of the chess clock, and the swoosh of sticks hitting the turf all at once.

Chakravyuh is the collective effort of the cadets working tirelessly day and night continuously just so every sports tournament can be a huge success. Many teams of different colleges are invited all together and teams from DMET itself compete with them with great sportsmanship and high level of professionalism. Prize pools are organized and winners are awarded with trophies and cash prizes. Those who don’t get to win, learn and experience a great professional tournament.

Chakravyuh: Beyond Sports

To our proud alumni, you know it well Chakravyuh was never just about medals. It was about the moments the early morning practices, the adrenaline of competition, the roar of your peers, and the quiet pride of a game played well. These were not just tournaments; they were life lessons etched into muscle memory.

Today’s cadets carry forward that legacy with the same fire in their hearts and the same discipline in their steps. They train not to compete, but to transform to become the maritime professionals and leaders of tomorrow. Chakravyuh instills resilience, teamwork, and character the very values required on board, where storms test more than just a ship.

Conclusion

Chakravyuh isn't about trophies—it's about transformation.

It turns cadets into comrades, competition into camaraderie and sports into symbols of transformation. It keeps alive the soul of DMET’s enduring legacy that leadership is built not only through knowledge and machinery, but through grit, spirit, and unity.

To all those who once laced up their boots, gripped a racket, or dived into the pool know this: we remembers you. And as each new batch steps into the arena, they do so following the echoes of your footsteps.
